Photonic crystal fiber mapping using Brillouin echoes distributed sensing.
In this paper we investigate the effect of microstructure irregularities and applied strain on backward Brillouin scattering by comparing two photonic crystal fibers drawn with different parameters in order to minimize diameter and microstructure fluctuations. We fully characterize their Brillouin properties including the gain spectrum and the critical power. Using Brillouin echoes distributed ...
متن کاملBrillouin Echoes for Advanced Distributed Sensing in Optical Fibres
Brillouin scattering is particularly efficient and attractive for the implementation of strain and temperature distributed sensing in optical fibres. Recently a trend has been observed that modern advanced applications require a substantial step towards better spatial resolution, while preserving temperature/strain precision over a long range. For this purpose the state of the art does not sati...
متن کاملModeling and evaluating the performance of Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensors.
A thorough analysis of the key factors impacting on the performance of Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensors is presented. An analytical expression is derived to estimate the error on the determination of the Brillouin peak gain frequency, based for the first time on real experimental conditions. This expression is experimentally validated, and describes how this frequency uncertainty dep...
متن کاملA multicore optical fiber for distributed sensing
With advancements in optical fiber technology, the incorporation of multiple sensing functionalities within a single fiber structure opens the possibility to deploy dielectric, fully distributed, long-length optical sensors in an extremely small cross section. To illustrate the concept, we designed and manufactured a multicore optical fiber with three graded-index (GI) multimode (MM) cores and ...
متن کاملBipolar pulse coding for enhanced performance in Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensors
We propose and experimentally demonstrate the possibility to use a pump signal based on bipolar pulse sequences using single-sideband suppressed-carrier (SSB-SC) modulation in Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensors. The SSB-SC modulated pump makes a sequential use of the Brillouin gain and loss spectra, increasing the intensity contrast of the measurements. The method is demonst...
